Canton Fair continues to serve BRI ties

Country’s largest trade event is an epitome of China’s new model of international cooperative development

The ongoing 133rd China Import and Export Fair, also known as Canton Fair, has continuously played a role in promoting the high-quality development of Belt and Road Initiative.

The country’s largest trade event is an epitome of China’s new model of international cooperative development. It also serves as a platform for China and BRI-involving regions to boost trade and common growth, said the fair’s organizing committee.

At this Canton Fair session, arrays of products are displayed, including many new and innovative ones. By taking advantage of the fair, many enterprises have further explored the markets of the BRI countries and regions, and got fruitful results.

Zhangzhou Tan Trading has participated in nearly 40 sessions of Canton Fair. Wu Chunxiu, business manager of the company, said Tan has built its own BRI-related cooperation network due to the fair, especially thanks to its online-and-offline-integrated development in recent years.

“Canton Fair has helped us establish relationships with our first batch of overseas customers. Currently, most of the company’s major clients have been met through the fair. Partners in Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and other BRI-related countries have contributed more than half of the company’s orders,” Wu said.

The company’s partners now cover 146 countries and regions, 70 percent of which are involved in the BRI.

“Canton Fair has given full play to its role as a platform for promoting opening-up, allowing enterprises to quickly establish trade relations with overseas partners,” Wu noted.

Cao Kunyan, business manager of Sichuan Mangzhuli Technology, said the company’s turnover has increased by 300 percent by attending the fair.

In 2021, the company met a Singaporean customer at the fair and signed a large order in 2022 after online and offline communication.

“Since participating in Canton Fair in 2017, we have accumulated a lot of customer resources, and our turnover has increased year by year. Many buyers from BRI-related markets have come to Sichuan to talk with us about business cooperation,” Cao said.

In the face of the cross-border e-commerce trend, Canton Fair helps enterprises find overseas partners via online and offline integration, and develop broader BRI-related markets, she added.

Li Kongling, a manager of Yangjiang Shibazi Kitchenware Manufacturing, said: “We have made appointments in advance with customers in Malaysia, the Philippines and other countries and regions to meet at Canton Fair.”

“We are looking forward to having in-person talks with our old friends and also making more new friends at the fair,” Li said.

The company has displayed 500 kinds of products developed for the BRI-related markets at the fair. And, with the help of the trade event, orders from the BRI countries and regions now account for 30 percent of the company’s total.

“Companies have benefited a lot from the fair’s various trade matchmaking activities, and ‘buying products globally and selling products to the whole world’ has become one of the most distinctive features of Canton Fair,” Li said.

At this Canton Fair session, a total of 508 enterprises from 40 countries and regions have participated in 12 professional exhibitions of the fair. Of them, 73 percent are involved in the BRI.

The exhibition area of the Turkish delegation with more than 80 local enterprises has reached a record high, with a net area of about 2,000 square meters.
